Agbar violates the Human Right to Water and Sanitation
Citizens claim their rights
Thanks to the pressure of the international movement for water, in 2010 the United Nations recognized water and sanitation as a fundamental human right.
Has Agbar guaranteed the Human Right to Water and Sanitation?
The answer is no. From 2008 to 2015 Agbar cut off the water supply of 75,000 vulnerable families.
Why did Agbar stop cutting off the water supply in 2015?
In 2015, social movements pushed for the approval of Law 24/2015, which forced Agbar to stop indiscriminate water cuts. Once more, it is the citizens who demanded the fulfillment of the human right to water and sanitation.
And what about the water debts of families?
While it is true that we have forced Agbar to stop cutting the water supply, the company does not annul the accumulated debt of families who cannot cope with such bills, and this debt is increasing. There are, in Barcelona, cases of families in a situation of vulnerability with a debt exceeding 1000 euros.
We can conclude without a doubt that Agbar does not guarantee the human right to water and sanitation.
